Romans Lesson 2 – Revelation

Romans 1:18-32

  • To grasp how awful rebellion against God is
  • To appreciate the greatness of salvation
  • To strive to live for God, not self

Sin is failing to do that which one knows to be right.

Paul’s Expectation

The Wrath of God Revealed  v 18

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
(Rom 1:17)

Verse 17 speaks of Gods righteousness available by grace.  Verse 18 speaks of God’s wrath.  This is not a denalipopular teaching today, but the wrath of God is as real as his grace.  Paul makes it clear that God has indignation against “ungodliness and unrighteousness”.  This is God’s opposition to sin and it’s consequences.  God’s judgement of sin is the other side of the coin of God’s love and mercy.

Ungodliness speaks of those who do not worship or give honor to God.  Of course today we do not view ourselves as idolaters although we neglect God and refuse to give homage to him.  Perhaps we would say we are guilty of neglect more so than outright idolatry, but the end result is the same.

“The unrighteousness of men” speaks of sinful acts of iniquity towards men.  I was hungry, I was naked, I was imprisoned, etc.

How Sinners Do This v18

These Men who sin against God and mankind are also guilty of suppressing the truth.  They push truth away, hold truth down, and keep it so.  You cannot understand human history and the depravity of man apart from the sin question outlined in Genesis Chapter 3.

The Rebellion of Man Revealed

The Natural Revelation of God to Man vv19-23

Knowledge of the general revelation of God is in the hearts and minds of men.  God placed it there.  This truth can be discerned by observing creation, it’s order, it’s vastness, and it’s precision.  God gave mankind reason and conscience so they are capable of studying and understanding His works.  In creation God spread out proofs of His power, His wisdom, and His goodness.  Read Psalm 19 by David, who confirms what Paul is saying.

Man’s Rejection of God’s Revelation

The Judgement Of God Revealed

False Worship vv24-25
Unnatural Affection vv26-27
Sinful Action vv28-32

The only way to overcome sin is tp receive God’s righteousness through His Son Jesus Christ and live day by day, seeking to please God by a life of faith.  Verse 17 is the key:

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
(Rom 1:17)
